Bulk Billed Eye Tests in Toowoomba: What You Need to Know
If you've been putting off an eye test because of the cost, you might not need to. Many Australians are eligible for a bulk billed eye test through Medicare — meaning you pay nothing out of pocket. At Darling Downs Optometry in Toowoomba, we offer bulk billing for eligible patients and have done so since 2006.
Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Bulk Billing for Eye Tests?
Bulk billing means your optometrist bills Medicare directly for the cost of your eye examination. You don't pay a gap fee, and you don't need to submit a claim yourself. It's the most affordable way to have your eyes professionally tested.
Not every optometry practice bulk bills, and not every patient is automatically eligible — so it's worth knowing where you stand before you book.
Who Is Eligible for a Bulk Billed Eye Test in Australia?
Medicare covers a comprehensive eye test once every three years for most Australian adults, and once every 12 months for people over 65, children under 15, or those with a higher risk of eye disease (such as people with diabetes or a family history of glaucoma).
To be eligible, you need:
- A valid Medicare card
- An Australian resident status
- To fall within the testing frequency allowed by Medicare for your age and health situation
If you've had an eye test with another provider recently, you may need to wait before the cost is covered again. Our reception team can help you check when you're next eligible.
What's Included in a Bulk Billed Eye Test?
A comprehensive eye test at Darling Downs Optometry covers:
- Visual acuity assessment (how clearly you can see at various distances)
- Refraction testing to determine your prescription
- Eye pressure measurement (a key screening tool for glaucoma)
- Assessment of eye muscle coordination
- Examination of the front and back of the eye
- Discussion of your results and any recommendations
If additional testing is required — such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) or digital retinal photography — these may be charged separately, and our team will always explain any costs before proceeding.
What About Glasses and Contact Lenses?
The bulk billed eye test covers the professional examination only. If you need glasses or contact lenses following your test, these are separate costs. However, we stock over 600 frames in-store across a wide range of price points, and our optical dispensers will help you find something that suits your needs and budget.
We also offer a buy-one-get-one-half-price deal on frames for patients purchasing two pairs.

Don't Wait Until Something Goes Wrong
Many serious eye conditions — including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy — develop with no noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Regular eye tests are one of the most effective ways to detect problems before they affect your vision permanently.
If you haven't had an eye test in the past two to three years, now is a great time to book.
