In Queensland, optometrists can apply for therapeutic endorsement, which permits them to diagnose and manage ocular diseases using scheduled medications — including prescribing certain eye drops — without requiring a GP referral.
Therapeutic endorsement requires additional postgraduate training in ocular pharmacology, clinical assessment, and disease management. At Darling Downs Optometry:

What Can Therapeutic Optometrists Treat?
Our therapeutically endorsed optometrists can diagnose and manage a wide range of eye conditions, including:
Dry eye disease Assessment of tear quality and quantity, management with prescription lubricants, anti-inflammatory treatments, and other therapies where indicated.
Anterior uveitis Inflammation inside the eye. Requires prompt diagnosis and treatment with topical steroids and dilating drops to prevent complications including vision loss and glaucoma.
Infectious conjunctivitis Bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with prescription antibiotic drops. We can diagnose the type and prescribe appropriate treatment without a GP visit.
Corneal ulcers and infections Urgent assessment and management of corneal infections, which can progress rapidly if untreated.
Blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction Chronic eyelid inflammation that contributes to dry eye and discomfort. Management may include prescription antibiotics in some presentations.
Glaucoma Diagnosis, monitoring, and initiation of treatment (including prescription eye drops to lower intraocular pressure). Referral to an ophthalmologist for surgical management when required.
Allergic conjunctivitis Management of ocular allergy, including prescription antihistamine and mast cell stabiliser drops.
Herpes simplex keratitis A viral infection of the cornea requiring antiviral treatment. Our optometrists can diagnose and initiate treatment.
